Arnold Schwarzenegger began his career with bodybuilding, winning the Junior Mr Europe. He won impressive bodybuilding titles like Mr Universe, Mr World, and Mr Olympia. In 1968, he came to the US and established himself as a bodybuilder as well as a businessman. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Superior with a major in international marketing of fitness and business administration.
In 1977, he played a supporting role in the movie Stay Hungry and bagged a Golden Globe for the Best Newcomer. A documentary film Pumping Iron and then a break in Conan the Barbarian, the sword-and-sorcery movie, which grossed $100 million worldwide, established him as a major box-office attraction. With The Terminator, the genre of futuristic action films sprang into action, and so did Arnold’s career.
He has also supported the Republican cause in US politics. He was the Chairman of Physical Fitness for the White House by the President’s Council, a post which he held from 1990 to 1993. He has political aspirations and is exploring the possibilities of being a Governor of California.
Married to a broadcast journalist Maria Shriver, niece of John F Kennedy, he leads a merry life with wife and four children at Pacific Palisades, California.
